Both use real people to promote products, so it is easy to mix them up. They solve different problems, and knowing the difference helps brands plan better and helps creators choose where to focus.
What is UGC?
UGC (user-generated content) is content made by a real person that looks like it came from a customer, such as a review, an unboxing or a demo. In paid UGC, a brand hires a creator to make that content and then uses it on its own channels, often in ads. The creator's own audience size matters little. What matters is the quality and authenticity of the content.
What is influencer marketing?
Influencer marketing means paying a creator to share a product with their own audience. The value comes from the creator's reach and the trust they have built. The content is posted on the creator's channels.
The main differences
- Where the content is posted. UGC usually goes on the brand's channels or ads. Influencer content goes on the creator's channels.
- What brands pay for. UGC pays for the content itself. Influencer deals pay for reach and trust.
- The creator's audience. For UGC it is not essential. For influencers it is the core of the deal.
- Rights. UGC deals often involve usage rights for the brand's ads. Influencer deals focus on posting terms.
- Goal. UGC builds a library of believable content. Influencer marketing builds awareness and social proof.
When to use which
- Choose UGC when you want authentic content for ads, product pages or your own social channels, or when you want many variations to test.
- Choose influencer marketing when you want to reach a specific community through a trusted voice, launch a product or build awareness.
- Use both for larger campaigns: influencers to start the conversation, UGC to keep it going in your own channels.
What this means for creators
If you do not have a large following, UGC is a great way to earn from your content skills. If you do have an engaged audience, you can offer both. Build a UGC portfolio or learn how influencers attract better deals.
